Do you ever feel like your past is haunting you?
Like you keep coming back to the same problem?
Or you have really, really bad luck?
Perhaps you feel like the universe is punishing you?
Or that you can’t get anything right?
Or MAYBE your mind is stuck in a detrimental thought loop that you simply cannot break?
Ooh now that’s a thought isn’t it?
If you have ever heard that old adage, you can’t change the problem, only your attitude to the problem then you might see where I am going with this. If not then Hi! Welcome to my thought process today!
So now we have established a small chance that your past is NOT haunting you, (and rather your thought processes are) I’ll explain where I am going with this….
Our brains and patterns…
Every week in my office I meet at least one client who tells me that the past is haunting them. They are NOT melodramatic, they have just identified that they are repeating patterns again and again and again. So much so that they simply cannot break out of the rut that they have found themselves in. Whether it’s anxiety, relationship issues, habitual behaviours, food or sabotage there is something programmed in their minds that leaves them feeling like they cannot move forward. So they keep finding themselves back at square one. After a while the past haunting them feels exhausting, frustrating or plain irritating and often leads to secondary behaviours whether its anger, isolation or even depression.
The thing about our brain is it LOVES patterns. Once it finds a pattern that works for it it almost rejoices repeating it. So if you learnt a negative habit in relationships early on then you may find yourself repeatedly attracting the SAME problem. Or if you struggle to complete tasks, or work with others these invariably have a trigger which was created in an early belief system which our brain just LOVES!
Are your emotional responses repeated?
At this point you may find your mind drifting to a problem you keep experiencing, or thinking of a friend who this also applies to (in which case please forward them the link) and you may even be having an ‘a ha!’ moment where you wonder how you didn’t notice before now that it is your brain sabotaging your happiness (not you).
If so then if you want to break OUT of the issue then it is time to break OUT of the thinking.
Now, your brain is programmed for pleasure, so your avoidance behaviour or negative habit may actually be beneficial to your mind in some way. Yes, even if you don’t think it is!
Change your responses to change your future….
So, can we really stop our past haunting us?
Simply, yes.
Through reprogramming our reactions to issues we are able to break out of our haunted past and create a future which has more positive outcomes.
In turn this alleviates stress, anxiety and panic whilst also allowing you to start making those decisions which are really important to you.
Treatments involve taking previous memories of the strong ‘undesired’ feeling and creating a response which would be more beneficial to you. NB: Depending on the situation will impact the number of sessions required.
Therefore clients can break the cycle, let go of their ghosts and start a progression forwards. Literally letting go of the old thought pattern and filing it away in the filing cabinet of the brain under the section ‘no longer required’. Free-ing up some headspace and the opportunity to create some reactions, thoughts and feelings which are peaceful/constructive/happier/(insert desired outcome).
The thing is, you have NO requirement to spend your life continually feeling unhappy/negative/punished or haunted… it CAN be different!
Sound too good to be true?
Fortunately for you, its a reality. (I like being a ghostbuster – wink wink)
